If you plan on visiting Grand Cayman, make plans to rent a car beforehand. With thousands of visitors every year, you can’t assume you’ll automatically get lucky with a Grand Cayman rent-a-car company.
Even though it’s the largest of the three Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman is still much smaller than any of the states; it is still large enough to warrant a rental car. If, for whatever reason, you plan on visiting without the benefit of a rental car, expect to add extra time on to all the sights and activities you plan on enjoying. This is because you will be at the mercy of taxis and shuttles, which can be very busy if you’re visiting during tourist season. Grand Cayman did launch a bus service back in 1998, so it would be possible to plan your vacation around the bus schedule.
Once you have your rental car, just remember that traffic moves forward on the left side of the road in Grand Cayman. Some Grand Caymans car rentals will actually come with a steering wheel on the left hand side of the vehicle for those who really struggle. Otherwise, expect to be driving from the right side of the car and on the right side of the road. Also, though signs may tell you the speed limit in miles per hour, your speedometer will most likely read in kilometers.
