Improving Truck Efficiency

Filed under: Transportation — admin @ 6:18 pm

It’s possible that in the future, the freight quote that you get could include added fees to offset the carbon footprint of the transportation of your goods. There’s no denying that, between oil consumed and greenhouse gases emitted, the trucking industry has had an impact on the environment. While it would cost a lot for the average freight shipping service to overhaul or replace their fleet of trucks for improved efficiency, the long-term benefits must be taken into account as well.

How can these behemoths of the road be improved to reduce their impact on the environment? There are a number of possibilities that could improve the efficiency of FTL and LTL shipping vehicles. One would be to redesign the vehicles to reduce air resistance. Less drag would mean less fuel consumed. Another possibility is to use heating and cooling units that run on auxiliary power — this prevents drivers from idling their engines.

Europe offers quirky museum options

Filed under: Travel — admin @ 4:17 pm

If you are visiting Italy and are getting tired of seeing nothing but world-class art in the Rome museums, there are other, more esoteric options available for you. In fact, Europe has some of the quirkiest and sometimes just plain bizarre museums in the world.

Hungry vacationers should make the National Pasta Museum part of their Rome sightseeings. Exhibits cover the history, production, nutritional values and consumption of Italy’s dietary staple. If you can’t work up an appetite while visiting this place, you might not ever eat again.

One of the quirkiest London excursions is the Royal London Hospital Museum. Located on the hospital grounds in the crypt of the Anglican Church, this museum reviews the past history and famous cases of London’s most well-known hospital. A significant display highlights the most famous patient in the hospital’s history: John Merrick, otherwise known as “The Elephant Man.”

What Isn’t Covered In Many Home Insurance Policies?

Filed under: Insurance — admin @ 2:22 pm

You might think that homeowners insurance would include your house and everything on your property. But the truth is that many policies have exclusions that can limit what is covered in your plan. Here are a few of the more common exclusions that you will want to be aware of when getting home insurance quotes.

  • Damage to fences and walls: If a tree falls on your house during a storm, you are likely to be covered. But most home insurance policies don’t cover damage to fences, walls and other external areas.
  • Damage to unoccupied homes: If a home has been left unoccupied for a month or more, the insurance policy might exclude coverage for damage caused by water or oil leakage. This could also apply to burglary and other malicious acts.

These are just a few examples of why it’s important to read your insurance policy to understand what is or isn’t covered.

The Secret of Successfully Freezing Foods Easily and Safely

Filed under: Food — admin @ 7:50 am

There is constant debate about whether food in the freezer is actually safe. The long-drawn confusion lies in the fact that few people understand the concept and how it does actually protect food.

What Can You Freeze?
Almost any kind of food can be frozen. Exceptions to this are canned food or eggs in shells. However, you can freeze the canned goods once it is out of the can. Keep in mind that food like mayonnaise, cream sauce and lettuce don’t freeze very well, while raw meat and poultry maintain their quality for a longer time than cooked.

Is Frozen Food Safe?
If food is stored constantly at 0°F, then it will always be safe. The quality of frozen food suffers with lengthy freeze storage. Freezing keeps food safe because it prevents the growth of micro organisms that cause spoilage and food borne illnesses.

Freshness & Quality
Food if frozen at peak quality, are better tasting than foods frozen closer to expiry dates. Make sure that food is stored at 0°F or lower to retain vitamin content, colour, flavour and texture.

Nutrient Retention
Freezing food doesn’t destroy nutrients. Meat and poultry products, once frozen, show little change in nutrient value.

Packaging
Ensure food is properly packaged to maintain quality and ‘freezer burn’. Use air-tight wrapping such as heavy duty foil, plastic wrap or paper or even airtight freezer containers.

Freeze Rapidly
To maintain quality, freeze food as fast as possible. Slow freezing creates ice crystals, and then the thawing process damages the cells and causes meat products to lose its juiciness.

5 Tips to Prevent Car Sickness before Your Journey

Filed under: Health — admin @ 10:30 am

Being car sick is a horrible feeling, ruining the trip you set out to enjoy. When you start to feel sick, your subconscious brain receives warnings from your eyes and ears, and believes it’s due to poisoning, and makes you feel sick. Vomiting might make you feel better, but your body will continue to attempt to rid itself of this ‘poison’.

A few measures you can take for yourself or your passengers who are susceptible to car sickness include:

– Route – take the less twisty and bumpy roads which often trigger car sickness. Plan your route carefully. Main roads mean a longer way, but also mean a pleasant drive that is faster and in a clean car. Your driving style also counts. The smoother the driving, the further you are away from being car sick.
– Avoid caffeine – this includes energy drinks that contain caffeine as well. Don’t drink it for at least 24 hours prior to the journey. A high intake of caffeine results in headaches which then trigger car sickness. The same applies for children, as well as fizzy drinks.
– Food – avoid heavy, acidic and greasy foods. Try something light an hour or two before the journey. Salad dressings containing vinegar should be avoided as are fruit juices and chocolate.
– Alcohol – avoid alcohol the night before your journey, and on the journey itself. Don’t smoke on the way.
– Sleep – sleep well the night before the journey. Pep yourself up about the trip. Don’t dread it.

3 Steps to a Perfect Beach Theme Wedding

Filed under: Wedding Services — admin @ 10:27 am

How does one plan a perfect beach theme wedding? Where do you start and what are the most important things to keep in mind? Here are the three most important factors to focus on…

Location
Find a suitable location. Make sure the beautiful beach you choose, allows weddings. Check with the local authorities to be absolutely sure. The venue must be easily accessible to guests and also make sure there is plenty of parking. Make sure the beach you choose for your wedding can accommodate the number of guests invited. Keep a check on weather conditions, and be prepared with marquees if the situation calls for it.

Attire
Beach theme weddings don’t require formal wear, but it’s your wedding, so you decide. Make sure you mention the dress code on the invitation, so your guests have a fair idea of what to wear. You might even want to consider a swimsuit dress code, or even a shorts and tee shirt wedding party. The possibilities are endless.

Accessories
Little accessories at your reception will enhance the theme of the wedding. For centrepieces, you could try sea shells and candles. Keep the theme uniform, from invitations, to programmes, place cards and even thank you notes. All accessories used at the wedding must fall under the theme otherwise; you run the risk of them looking tacky and uncoordinated.

Keep these three factors in mind, and your beach wedding will be must talked about by friends and family.

Generator Shopping 101

Filed under: Hardware — admin @ 1:47 pm

As the number of electrical outages keep rising from storms, brownouts and other issues, more people than ever are looking to get back-up power for their homes in case of an outage. This is understandable and commendable, but it can also be confusing if you’ve never shopped for a generator before. Before you spend big money on a 100 kw generator, it’s good to know some generator basics.

No matter what generator you wind up getting, you will want to have an automatic transfer switch installed professionally into your power grid. This will automatically transfer the power to and from the power grid and your generator in case of an outage. Not only does this save you from having to manually do it, but it prevents the power “backing up” – which could cause electrical fires or electrocution to yourself or power workers.

Also, there’s no need to get a generator that is far more powerful than you need. A good rule of thumb is to add up the power usage of the various appliances and items you need to have powered during an emergency. 15 kw John Deere generators (or from another supplier) should be more than enough to do the trick to power your house.
