Steps for securing your flashing around your chimney:
· Pull the lip of the cap flashing from your mortar joint, but just until it stops coming easily. Don’t yank the whole flashing out, and don’t completely pull it from your chimney. The lesser amount that you’ll have to separate, it’ll be easier for you to fix.
· With your flashing from your mortar joint, clean your old mortar using a hammer and a chisel, and put on safety glasses to keep your eyes protected. After that, being careful so that you don’t damage your flashing, use a wire brush on the joint to clear out the debris.
· Wet your joint using a paintbrush that’s been wet with water. Using a small trowel, fill your joint firmly using cement mortar.
· When the joint’s full, press the lip of the flashing into the mortar, in the same place as before. Place the flashing firmly in, but do not push it too far. If you do, it might pop out again. If this happens, you’re going to have to begin again. Allow the mortar to dry.
· When your joint’s completely cured, put caulk around the joint and over the lip of your cap flashing using rubber caulk.
