To Wicker or Not to Wicker? Rattan Dining Furniture Discussion

Filed under: Home improvement — publisher @ 3:34 pm

Wicker furniture that is made to withstand the elements is called outdoor resin wicker furniture.  But wicker isn’t the only material out there for chairs that can blow your mind.  What about rattan furniture?  If you like exotic pets, then you will love this exotic palm, more common in the mallets of drum sticks than any other type of palm.  Rattan is used to make chairs, a phenomenon that started in Indonesia in the later 1940s.  Rattan dining furniture is increasing in popularity along with wicker, and other types of palm furniture.

But if you aren’t into furniture, there are many other uses for the rattan plant, including the dye in the fruit, which was used to color violins.  In the casino game of craps, the stick used to move the dice is almost always made of rattan.  Rattan is also processed with calcium, carbon, and a phosphate solution to create an artificial bone-like material commonly used in bone-transplants of livestock, including sheep.  The process takes 10 days to be completed.  The actual bone and small particles integrate with the artificial bone, causing a bone continuation.

If you are not interested in casino games or artificial bone, furniture is definitely a more popular use for this plant, as are baskets.  If you happen to be a basket collector, you should look into rattan immediately, because it happens to an excellent basket-weaving material.
