Guidelines for Winter Home Safety

Filed under: Home improvement — admin @ 1:12 pm

With the arrival of the winter cold and stormy weather, warmth and safety becomes a natural priority for any home for both adults and children alike. If one overlooks simple precautions during a time when injuries and deaths are most likely, things can turn critical in a hurry and as statistics shows that hypothermia and damage caused due to heating equipment are the reasons for almost one-third of the deaths during the winter season.

So, here are a few tips that can help keep you and your family safe and warm during these months:

1) Ensure that heating equipment is installed safely, while hiring a specialist to check the equipment just before the start of the winter season.
2) Check and clean your fireplace chimney and flue every year, while only using untreated wood. DON’T use pine wood or paper as options.
3) Install a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm near bedrooms and on each floor of the house. Check the batteries used for the smoke alarm regularly. If either of these alarms goes off, leave the house immediately for fresh air and call emergency services and your doctor (for the latter) for help.
4) Keep space heaters at least three feet away from any item that is inflammable such as clothing, furniture and bedding.
5) NEVER leave a pet or a child unsupervised in a room with a space heater. It can cause severe burns if tipped over by the child or the pet.
6) NEVER use your oven or range to heat your home.
7) Finally, keep supplies that are needed such as food, water and blanket in case of natural disasters and power outages.

Selecting the Best Food Packaging Paper

Filed under: Food — admin @ 3:13 pm

The need for safer and hygienic food packaging has never been more evident ever since the increased sale of a wide range of beverages and foods at supermarkets and fast food restaurants. However, packaging dates back as far as the second century B.C with paper used as the packaging material for both foods and fruits as well. Apart from paper packaging, a variety of other packaging material is used these days such as boxes, cans and cartons among several others.

However, with a greater emphasis on hygiene and safety standards to meet the needs of consumers today and the growing concern of eliminating waste (stemming from packaging products) that are not necessarily eco-friendly such as plastic bags, recent developments such as wax packaging paper are showing promise in meeting these requirements.

However, since packaging has become a way of life, improvements have been made by means of introducing wax packaging that has met all packaging standards for safe and hygienic consumption.

Since these developments are at the manufacturing level, it is important that people pay a bit more attention to packaging when it comes to daily use. One should watch the kind of packaging paper they pick as there are different types of paper that cater to a particular type of food that range from red meat to bread products as well. As these are manufactured, they also come in varying quality, so it is imperative that one should only select the highest quality of packaging paper in order to keep the food healthy.

How to Recognize Water Damage in your Home

Filed under: Home improvement — admin @ 3:12 pm

It’s not necessary that only floods and rainfall can damage your home but there are also less obvious ways such as water leaks, ice dams on the roof, accumulation of water in the basement and leaky appliances which use water such as dishwashers etc. Even small amounts of water can damage your home in a variety of ways, so it bodes well for home owners to recognize early signs of water damage before it gets out of hand.

The three most common signs of water damage are water stains, mold formation and foul odor, and most experts require you to constantly check your house for such signs, long before it begins to destroy your property that has been purchased by hard-earned money. Apart from looking for signs, a smart way to go about this is to turn off all your water sources, and check your water meter readings.

Here are some areas of the house that one must look in for signs mentioned earlier to locate water damage:

1) Basement and crawl space for these signs
2) Wooden floors, doors, windows and inside walls
3) Carpets
4) Appliances that use water such as dishwashers and washing machines
5) Cabinets
6) Drywall
7) Ceiling
8) Gutters which could indicate a water leak

Please remember that if you cannot locate a water leak then contact a professional at the earliest because if ignored, this can have far-reaching effects in the future. If the leak is minor then you can attempt to fix it yourself but otherwise expert help is advised.

Make Sure You Stay Healthy

Mrs. Julie, who’s our neighbor in Florida, had some hard time trying to find the right insurance plan.
She is very old and does not know anything about computers and the Internet, so she couldn’t do research on her own. That’s why I am her only source of information, and naturally I decided to help my neighbor.

People aged 65 and older can be enrolled in Medicare insurance plans. This insurance is funded by the government and covers the doctors’ services, hospital and prescription drug expenses.

At first it seemed exactly what she needed, and I was very proud that I found the best option for her. But Mrs. Julie turned out to be very picky.

After she got her Medicare, she set out to find the best Medicare supplemental insurance plans. She told me that a Florida Medigap insurance plan will help her cover expenses that Medicare does not. The offerings of each insurance company varies, so we had to do more research to choose the best option.

As we later found out, there were 12 standard Medigap plans. We’ve learned that some of the Medigap plans cover skilled nursing facility care coinsurance, foreign travel emergency and even at-home recovery.

She seemed very excited and decided to complete the package with vision insurance and delta dental individual insurance.

For help and information we contacted MWGInsuranceMall.com. Their specialists helped us a lot in the decision-making process.

To be honest, the research was very interesting and helpful since I will be turning 65 myself before long. Plus, every time I went to her house, there were delicious brownies and cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows awaiting me.

The History of Pizza

Filed under: Health — admin @ 12:24 pm

Not much is known about the origin of the pizza. Some say that its preparation dates as far back to Neolithic and similarities between the pizza and the flatbreads from cultures around the world are more than obvious.

However, no matter what people say, there’s no doubt that the pizza finds its beginnings (for the Western world) in Naples when Raffaele Esposito created the ‘Pizza Margherita’ with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil to honor the Queen consort of Italy, as until then it was considered a ‘peasant food’.

There no doubt that this changed everything and such was the attraction to the pizza that many a visitor from all over the world would venture into the poorer sections of Naples to try it. Since then, Naples takes it pizzas very seriously, while considering the ‘Marinara’ and the ‘Margherita’ to be the only two true pizzas since when they were first made, and to this day serving them at pizzerias.

With Italian immigrants leaving for better opportunities to the United States, pizzas also found their way there on the streets of San Francisco, Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia that were Italian-dominated neighborhoods. What followed was the first pizzeria opened by Gennaro Lombardi in Little Italy, Manhattan.

As the popularity of the ‘pizza’ spread from city to city in the following decades, the American version was created and sold first at Pizza Hut. Several chain restaurants also followed suit, each with their own distinct style and flavor.

In today’s world, with the emphasis moving away from pizza dine-in restaurants to home delivery by Pizza Hut, several restaurants have also done the same such as Domino’s, Pizza Ranch, Godfather’s Pizza, Papa John’s Pizza, Giordano’s Pizza, Mazzio’s, and the Brooklyn Pizzeria.

Pros and Cons of Steel Shelving

Filed under: Home improvement — admin @ 12:23 pm

Steel shelves are a popular choice of use these days as you have several types that have been designed to fit the needs of its customers. Known for its durability under duress, the chances of it breaking down under pressure is very unlikely, and can be used for a variety of purposes spanning industrial as well as domestic use.

There are two types of steel shelves that you can buy. The first option are stainless steel shelves which are normally the popular choice for industrial use as they can hold objects that are heavier as well as resistant to rust.

The second option is normal steel shelves which can be used in offices and homes, as they comes different colors, designs and styles but do not have as much of a weight carrying capacity as stainless steel shelves. Some of these units have a back panel which means that items stored on these shelves will not fall out.

Another interesting way to determine the right shelf for your needs is to first decide what kind of items it will carry and where it is going to be placed as well. Based on these, one can purchase units that have several shelves to store several items or a few to be used in places where not so many shelves can be accommodated. Safety measures that will ensure people that don’t get hurt in an industrial environment are also very important.

So these are some points to consider (and ask your local dealer) while buying a steel shelf for your use.

Healthy Snacks

Filed under: Health — admin @ 4:25 am

Thanks to the media constantly providing us with the latest updates on the most recent illnesses, the emphasis on taking care of your health has increased to levels that would seem obsessive to a hypochondriac (or then maybe not!).

With food (and physical activity) being the most important factors to reducing the risk of fatal disease, one has to constantly keep track of their dieting habits (the what and when) in order to keep their energy levels high which would do more than just get the day rolling.

Perhaps it is not enough to say that one has to eat a king’s breakfast, a prince’s lunch and a miserly dinner anymore but to also supplement these three important meals with in-between snacks. And for that, processed foods like potato chips, cookies, crackers containing varying (read: unhealthy) levels of salt and sugar are on offer, and along with the invention of the television has given birth to the post-modern syndrome known as the ‘couch potato’ who can’t stop stuffing his face.

However, if one is cognizant of the ill effects of these snacks and seeks to do something about it, healthier options are available. So here are a few options:

1. Pop Corn – Go for the healthier, at home version.
2. Protein Bars – Two advantages being, they help you build lean mass and you’re happy with just one or two.
3. Fresh Fruit – Perhaps the best alternative of the lot for its nutrition and health benefits
4. A bowl of healthy cereal with milk
5. Nuts – An excellent choice for those who want to watch their heart.

Overcoming Panic Attacks

Filed under: Health — admin @ 4:25 am

It never ceases to amaze me how people respond to illogical acts of behavior with the proverbial ‘freak’ or ‘psycho’ being the most common choice of words used to disparage the individual’s unruly state of mind. It’s strange that physical disorders are treated with a lot more care, concern and in some cases, an adequate degree of empathy than psychological disorders.

Perhaps this prejudice stems from an innate fear of being ostracized as a ‘misfit’ who is obviously not in his right mind to be able to observe the norms and rules that will hamper the peace and harmony upon which all of civilized society must thrive on to survive. One of these disorders that are growing day by day is the condition known as the ‘panic attack’.

However, much like physical disorders which have symptoms, a panic attack has ‘triggers’ that sends the individual rapidly spiraling down into a state of paranoia as it were in regarding a particular situation that they find themselves in to be a possible threat while showing signs of sweating, a racing pulse and bouts of uncontrollable nervousness and fear.

The question here is whether medication is the answer, which several experts consider unnecessary.

The solution, however, lies within the person. Instead of trying to run away from the problem, one should seek to confront the ‘triggers’ that cause the attack in the first place.

One should try to practice breathing slowly while reminding yourself that the perceived threat is just your imagination, and that everything is perfectly safe and natural. Running away will not solve anything, whether it is in the case of panic attacks or otherwise.
