Today’s vent… I spend hours a day studying my butt off to ensure I know everything I can to not only complete my Dietitian Degree with skill and knowledge but to know as much as I can so that when I am qualified I am able to help every person I come across – no matter what their history, diet challenges or health issues… I, like hundreds/thousands of other Nutrition students every year, spend years and 1000’s of $$$$ to become qualified and knowledgeable enough to help others – MEANWHILE… there are people out there making millions of $$$$ without any studies or qualifications and with no idea on overweight issues as they have never been overweight in their life! Now you would never send your children to a school with unqualified teachers, you would never spend hundreds of $$ on a TV or computer without doing research and without warranty, you wouldn’t give your life savings to a bum on the street and hope they invest it wisely for you…. SO WHY PAY HUNDREDS OF $$$ TO SOMEONE THAT COULDN’T BE BOTHERED LEARNING THE NECESSARY SKILLS AND INFORMATION TO GUIDE YOU WITH YOUR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE – IF THEY CAN’T BE BOTHERED TO DO THAT FOR YOU – WHY WOULD YOU THINK YOUR BEST INTERESTS ARE WHAT THEY CARE ABOUT??????

Ways to reduce the consumption of salt

We are all aware that the consumption of too much salt can result in high blood pressure and other complications but that a certain amount is required by the body to regulate fluid and blood pressure. With our lives becoming more busier we are inclined to reach out to convenience foods which are loaded with salt to add flavor. So how can we reduce the amount of salt we consume?

Cook your own meals

Do not add processed foods which contain high sodium levels. Use fresh ingredients and add natural sea salt in moderation, use herbs and spices to add flavor. Do not add extra salt at the table. Use unsalted butter and margarine.

Read labels

There is a lot of hidden sodium in canned foods, cereal, frozen meals and deli meats. Take time to read the labels and select products that have less added sodium.

Ask for less salt when dining out

Request that less salt is added to your food when dining out, even at a fast food outlet ask for less salt on your fries. Do not use additional ketchup, mayo or mustard and especially soya sauce as they all contain salt.

How to eat healthy during summer

Summer is here and so are the loads of fresh fruits and vegetables. It is the best time of the year to eat healthy. However, with all the BBQ’s and parties one can be easily distracted from a healthy eating plan. Here are some tips on how to make the best of summer for the best of health.

1. Drink plenty of water- You need plenty of fluid to stay hydrated during the hot months, avoid sodas which contain a lot of sugar. Instead, have water, watermelon and cucumber to stay cool and hydrated.

2. Ice cream – summer will not be complete without ice cream. Try a fruit sorbet or frozen yoghurt instead of the high fat, high sugar ice cream.

3. If you are having a BBQ , use lean cuts of meat and use less fat and salt, instead use spices, and herbs to add flavor. Have plenty of salads with fresh ingredients and have fresh fruits for dessert.

4. Always have breakfast and have a light dinner.

5. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Whenever possible have the vegetables raw and have a range of colors veggies on the plate.
