Buying a Treadmill

Filed under: Health — publisher @ 12:40 am

Treadmills are available in so many different sizes with a variety of options to choose from. Before purchasing a treadmill for yourself, first decide your fitness goals, or even get an opinion from a fitness coach regarding what kind of treadmill would suit you best.

First decide if you are going to use the treadmill for walking or running. If you plan to run on the treadmill at high speed, then close attention must be paid to its shock absorbers. The better the shock absorbers, the lesser stress on your spine and joints. If you are going to use the treadmill only for walking, then a low speed belt going at around 5km per hour should do.

If the model you are considering is a fairly expensive one, then think again. Ensure that everything is checked, in order to avoid disappointment.
Here are a few of the questions you should be asking when purchasing a treadmill:

1. Is it child safe?

2. Does the treadmill have an emergency ‘power off’ button?

3. Is it comfortable? Stand on it, jog on it, increase and decrease the speed gradually and check if everything is alright for you.

4. Take a close look at the control panel. Is it easy to figure out? Can you easily switch settings like the speed when running on it?

5. Check on its durability. Is it durable enough to sustain the exercising of your entire family? Look at the specifications such as its horsepower.

6. It would also be a good idea to check on the maximum weight allowed on the treadmill.

7. Does it have automatic load? If it does, check if it has pulse measurement.

Reverse osmosis for water filters

Filed under: Health — publisher @ 2:07 pm

Among the several methods that are used in filtration, reverse osmosis is one of those methods that have been found to be most effective in separating solids from liquids and among its many applications, purifying water for drinking is one of its most important uses.

With a blast of options that one can find if they are looking for a water filter, it is indeed hard to decide I the best for your family. Even though most companies sell their product as different from the rest, the methods used in several stages in the process of filtration are more or less the same but with minimum variations that might not necessarily impact the final product.

Very simply, reverse osmosis is the opposite of osmosis, which applies pressure on the solution which is on one side of the membrane (used to filter the substance) resulting in the solute (the impurities in this case) remaining on the pressurized side of the membrane while the solvent (pure water, in this case) passes through the membrane to the other side.

The reverse osmosis water filter consists of several parts that require to be changed on a continuous basis in order to help you obtain the best drinking water that is available. Mot studies claim that using one these filters regularly produces the best results and without the need to use chlorine for purification purposes.

So, if it is pure water that you are looking for, water filters that use the method of reverse osmosis are the best for your family.

Vitamin Supplements to Help you Through your Monthly Period

Filed under: Health — admin @ 2:27 pm

Most women dread that time of the month. Monthly periods give most women a lot of discomfort – which is linked mainly to a nutrient deficiency. Once the necessary vitamins are taken, then getting through your period is so much easier.

Moodiness
Sometimes before your period, you will notice that you tend to get more emotional than usual. You might get angry or cry more easily, or feel like your moods are uncontrollable or even feel depressed. Most of these mood swings cannot even be linked to any particular reason. This means that you are lacking in vitamin B6. This nutrient improves moods, and releases dopamine and other such neurotransmitters. Anxiety experienced prior to menstruation can be avoided if vitamin B6 is taken along with a magnesium preparation.

Painful breasts
Not having enough vitamin E will cause your breasts to become swollen and hard prior to menstruation. Sometimes your breast hurt even when touched. Taking the necessary vitamin E will reduce this discomfort and pain by around 11%. Taking vitamin E will also help towards any pain you experience in the abdominal area.

Insomnia
Close to 60% of women, a week before their period, find it difficult to fall asleep. Even if they do fall asleep, they wake up far too easily. Insomnia of this nature is caused by a deficiency of tryptophan due to hormonal changes.

Acne
Acne is also quite commonly experienced prior to menstruation and is caused by a lack of zinc. Deficiency of zinc leads to the infection and inflammation of a particular enzyme.

Alcohol Addiction at Different Ages

Filed under: Health — admin @ 1:53 pm

Some people begin abusing alcohol at a young age while others don’t become addicted until later in life. Read more about the factors that cause people to become alcoholics at different ages.

There are several factors that determine a person’s susceptibility to drug and alcohol addiction. Among these factors is age. Studies have shown that teens in drug and alcohol rehab tend to experience stronger mental and physical withdrawal symptoms. Scientists believe this is a product of the fact that teens’ brains are still developing, leaving them particularly at risk to the short-term effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

Along with impacting how people recover from alcohol addiction, age also plays a role in why people become addicted in the first place. While there are certain factors that are common among all alcoholics (such as a likelihood of having parents who were addicts), there are also other factors that are common in younger alcoholics versus those who become addicted to alcohol and need treatment in a rehab center later in life.

Teens who end up in alcohol and drug rehabilitation usually start drinking by age 12 and steadily increase their alcohol consumption until they are alcoholics by the time they are in their late teens. Boys are more likely than girls to become alcoholics at a young age. Frequently there are underlying mental health problems such as attention deficit disorder that are associated with teen alcoholics. Teens with drinking problems also tend to have a less stable social network and poor coping skills.

Adult alcoholics who end up in an addiction center tend to drink because of outside forces. For example, a person might start drinking because of stress at work or trouble with their personal life. Instead of using alcohol as a social lubricant or way to have fun, they use alcohol to dull their senses and numb their mental pain and stress. In an addiction program, adult alcoholics are taught more positive ways to relieve their stress and manage difficult situations.

How to Avoid Sun Burns This Summer

Filed under: Health — admin @ 4:17 am

Protecting your children from the harsh rays of the sun is very important, especially during summer. Take into consideration that your children spend more time outdoors during the summer, and that is coincidentally also the time when the sun is at its hottest. Keep a close eye on your kids, watch out for signs of a heatstroke, apart from sunburns, and you must ensure that your kids drink lots of water in order to prevent them getting dehydrated. Here are a few easy steps to ensure your kids stay safe:

While staying out of the sun would be the best way to avoid any problems, but that really is not even an option. Instead, invest in a really good sunscreen. Read the fine print and make sure that the sunscreen blocks UVB and UVA rays, and comes armed with a Sun Protection Factor or SPF of 30+ at least. Get your kids used to applying it around 30 minutes before they head outdoors, as they need this time for the sunscreen to be absorbed into their skin to ensure maximum protection from the sun. Once they are out and about in the sun, reapply the sunscreen every couple of hours, and even more often if they are swimming. When applying the sunscreen, apply it generously, and make sure you get every bit of exposed skin. In most cases, parents just do not apply enough.

Apart from the sunscreen, you should your children sun hats. Since they are available in a myriad of sizes, shapes and colours, you can let your children choose whichever ones they like. You just have to ensure that it covers their face, neck and ears.

If your children have skin that is very sensitive, then you might also want to buy them sun shirts, which are worn predominantly by surfers, and have an SPF of 150+.

Maintaining a Lifetime of Sobriety

Filed under: Health — admin @ 12:28 pm

It is not easy to maintain sobriety after a serious drug or alcohol addiction. In addition to regular doctor visits, therapy sessions and support group meetings, there could be times when a recovering addict may need to escape to a safe place where they can refocus their efforts on sobriety. And what better place to run to than the alcohol and drug treatment center they graduated from?

Whether you have been sober for 20 days or 20 years, there is always the temptation to drink just one sip or smoke just one hit. However, the right support and guidance will remind you of the serious consequences if you follow the path to addiction once again. If you are tempted to fall off the wagon, contact your rehab center.  They may have a program available that fits your needs. For example, leading rehabilitation center Cirque Lodge offers the Guesting Privilege. Available to residents who have completed the program, this service allows graduates an opportunity to return to the drug and alcohol rehab center and remain as a guest for up to four days (96 hours).

While this offer stands for the life time of the former resident, there are a few restrictions: Alumni must have remained sober and rooms are based on availability and approval from the clinical staff. If you need some time to recoup and refocus your efforts on sobriety, please contact the alcohol and drug addiction facility today.

The History of Pizza

Filed under: Health — admin @ 12:24 pm

Not much is known about the origin of the pizza. Some say that its preparation dates as far back to Neolithic and similarities between the pizza and the flatbreads from cultures around the world are more than obvious.

However, no matter what people say, there’s no doubt that the pizza finds its beginnings (for the Western world) in Naples when Raffaele Esposito created the ‘Pizza Margherita’ with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil to honor the Queen consort of Italy, as until then it was considered a ‘peasant food’.

There no doubt that this changed everything and such was the attraction to the pizza that many a visitor from all over the world would venture into the poorer sections of Naples to try it. Since then, Naples takes it pizzas very seriously, while considering the ‘Marinara’ and the ‘Margherita’ to be the only two true pizzas since when they were first made, and to this day serving them at pizzerias.

With Italian immigrants leaving for better opportunities to the United States, pizzas also found their way there on the streets of San Francisco, Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia that were Italian-dominated neighborhoods. What followed was the first pizzeria opened by Gennaro Lombardi in Little Italy, Manhattan.

As the popularity of the ‘pizza’ spread from city to city in the following decades, the American version was created and sold first at Pizza Hut. Several chain restaurants also followed suit, each with their own distinct style and flavor.

In today’s world, with the emphasis moving away from pizza dine-in restaurants to home delivery by Pizza Hut, several restaurants have also done the same such as Domino’s, Pizza Ranch, Godfather’s Pizza, Papa John’s Pizza, Giordano’s Pizza, Mazzio’s, and the Brooklyn Pizzeria.

Healthy Snacks

Filed under: Health — admin @ 4:25 am

Thanks to the media constantly providing us with the latest updates on the most recent illnesses, the emphasis on taking care of your health has increased to levels that would seem obsessive to a hypochondriac (or then maybe not!).

With food (and physical activity) being the most important factors to reducing the risk of fatal disease, one has to constantly keep track of their dieting habits (the what and when) in order to keep their energy levels high which would do more than just get the day rolling.

Perhaps it is not enough to say that one has to eat a king’s breakfast, a prince’s lunch and a miserly dinner anymore but to also supplement these three important meals with in-between snacks. And for that, processed foods like potato chips, cookies, crackers containing varying (read: unhealthy) levels of salt and sugar are on offer, and along with the invention of the television has given birth to the post-modern syndrome known as the ‘couch potato’ who can’t stop stuffing his face.

However, if one is cognizant of the ill effects of these snacks and seeks to do something about it, healthier options are available. So here are a few options:

1. Pop Corn – Go for the healthier, at home version.
2. Protein Bars – Two advantages being, they help you build lean mass and you’re happy with just one or two.
3. Fresh Fruit – Perhaps the best alternative of the lot for its nutrition and health benefits
4. A bowl of healthy cereal with milk
5. Nuts – An excellent choice for those who want to watch their heart.

Overcoming Panic Attacks

Filed under: Health — admin @ 4:25 am

It never ceases to amaze me how people respond to illogical acts of behavior with the proverbial ‘freak’ or ‘psycho’ being the most common choice of words used to disparage the individual’s unruly state of mind. It’s strange that physical disorders are treated with a lot more care, concern and in some cases, an adequate degree of empathy than psychological disorders.

Perhaps this prejudice stems from an innate fear of being ostracized as a ‘misfit’ who is obviously not in his right mind to be able to observe the norms and rules that will hamper the peace and harmony upon which all of civilized society must thrive on to survive. One of these disorders that are growing day by day is the condition known as the ‘panic attack’.

However, much like physical disorders which have symptoms, a panic attack has ‘triggers’ that sends the individual rapidly spiraling down into a state of paranoia as it were in regarding a particular situation that they find themselves in to be a possible threat while showing signs of sweating, a racing pulse and bouts of uncontrollable nervousness and fear.

The question here is whether medication is the answer, which several experts consider unnecessary.

The solution, however, lies within the person. Instead of trying to run away from the problem, one should seek to confront the ‘triggers’ that cause the attack in the first place.

One should try to practice breathing slowly while reminding yourself that the perceived threat is just your imagination, and that everything is perfectly safe and natural. Running away will not solve anything, whether it is in the case of panic attacks or otherwise.

Gates Makes $10 Billion Vaccines Pledge

Filed under: Health — admin @ 1:03 pm

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has pledged to donate $10 billion that will be used for the research and development of new vaccines. The donation, part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will fund the initiative to bring new vaccines to the world’s poorest countries.

Bill Gates has also requested governments and other businesses to contribute as well and added that the aim will be to immunize 90% of children against critical diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia in poorer countries.

“We must make this the decade of vaccines,” Bill Gates said in a statement. “Vaccines already save and improve millions of lives in developing countries. Innovation will make it possible to save more children than ever before.”

The current donation pledge for vaccine research more than doubles the $4.5 billion that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have donated over the last 10 years.

An estimated 7.6 million children aged below five will benefit from vaccines over the next 10 years. The foundation also added that an additional 1.1 million children could be saved by introducing a vaccine by 2014.

The donation pledge from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation was welcomed by Margaret Chan, head of the World Health Organization. She praised Gates for the unprecedented contribution and called for support from governments and other contributors as well.

An effective way to improve the public health system of any country is provide vaccination to children. Melinda Gates expressed this perfectly by saying “Vaccines are a miracle, with just a few doses; they can prevent deadly diseases for a lifetime.”
