Business leaders urge Missouri for more vet tech education funding

Filed under: Pets — admin @ 4:04 pm

A group of executives from companies offering animal jobs met with Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon in September with one goal in mind: getting the state to increase funding for more financial funding and resources for veterinary assistant schools.

According to representatives from many leading companies, the lack of two-year programs can make it difficult to find a qualified veterinary assistant when a position becomes available.

“Right now we have about five on staff, but once we have openings, they’re tough to find,” said Craig Martin, director of research and development at Nestle Purina Petcare Co. “And the veterinarians I talk to say they’re always looking for more.”

In response to the business leaders, Gov. Nixon said that he would add their concerns to a list of other issues to possibly be addressed during the next legislative session.

Billionaire clown heads for space station

Filed under: Entertainment — admin @ 3:05 pm

Canadian circus tycoon Guy Laliberte and two crew mates lifted off from Kazakh steppe lifted off in a spacecraft on schedule on 30th September and headed for the International Space Station. It was the Soyuz capsule that carried the Cirque du Soleil founder, US Astronaut Jeffrey Williams and Russian Cosmonaut Maxim Surayev towards their destination far out in space.

Friends and family gathered to watch the spacecraft burst in to space and were overwhelmed with joy when the announcement came that the crew of three were safely in orbit on their way to the International Space Station. Laliberte paid $35 million for his trip in to space and plans to use it to help publicize the world’s growing shortage of clean drinking water. The tycoon also made an attempt to make space travel fun by donning his bulbous red clown nose and blowing kisses to fans and supporters. Laliberte also brought several clown noses for his crew mates and stated that he will tickle them when they are asleep.

Singer Garrou said “I feel a lot more mesmerized than I ever thought I would be,” after the launch. “Having your friend rising up that fast and that impressively is beyond what I expected.” All three crew members brought little trinkets that would remind them of the folks back home. Laliberte is scheduled to return to earth in 12 days.

Skull piece thought to be Hitler’s is from woman

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:04 pm

A piece of skull with a bullet hole through it claimed by Russian Officials to belong to Adolf Hitler actually came from a woman, reveals scientists at the university of Connecticut have concluded. The skull fragment was part of a collection of artifacts that were recovered by the Soviet armed forces after Hitler and Eva Braun reportedly committed suicide.

Connecticut archeologist Nick Bellantoni was asked to examine the skull and blood samples for a History Channel documentary on Hitler’s death that aired in September. Bellantoni stated that the bone was small and thin and that male bones are much thicker and more robust. He also stated that this particular bone would have come from a woman or a younger male. The scientists were also able to extract enough DNA from the bones to conduct a thorough analysis. The analysis revealed that the skull came from a 20-40 year old woman. However the blood samples recovered showed DNA belonging to a male and female. Bellantoni also stated that eyewitnesses hadn’t reported Eva Braun being shot and she is said to have died of cyanide poisoning.

The Russian Military claims that they recovered the bodies of Hitler and Eva Braun from a shell crater shortly after he had died. Russian officials also claimed that he was later buried beneath a Soviet army parade ground in the former East German city of Magdeburg

Toyota to recall 3.8M vehicles over floor mats

Filed under: Transportation — admin @ 4:32 am

A high speed crash close to San Diego in August 2009 that killed four members of a family in an out-of-control Lexus ES 350 led Toyota Motor Corp., to issue its largest ever US recall – 3.8 million vehicles. The Toyota recall is to address problems with a removable floor mat that has the potential to cause accelerators to get stuck and lead to a crash.

On September 29, Toyota and the government warned owners to remove mats from their vehicles temporarily, until the automaker found a way to fix the potential safety hazard. The recall of 3.8 million vehicles includes popular models such as Toyota Camry (2007-10 model year) which is the U.S.’s top-selling passenger car and the best-selling gas-electric hybrid – the Toyota Prius (2004-09). Others include: 2005-10 Toyota Avalon, 2005-10 Toyota Tacoma, 2007-10 Toyota Tundra, 2007-10 Lexus ES 350 and 2006-10 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 vehicles.

Toyota is still working with officials of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to find a solution and stated that car owners would be notified about the recall as early as next week. The company’s spokesperson, Irv Miller said that until Toyota finds a solution, owners should take out the removable floormat on the driver’s side.

According to the NHTSA, reports of over 100 incidents had been received in which the accelerator might have been stuck on Toyota vehicles. However, it was unclear regarding how many of them led to crashes.

Toyota’s previously largest U.S. recall was about 900,000 vehicles in 2005 to fix a steering issue.

Remembering the lessons of Hurricane Floyd

Filed under: Hardware — admin @ 5:03 pm

Ten years ago, the Atlantic Coast region was struck by Hurricane Floyd, a Category 4 storm that brought record rainfall and flooding to much of the region. With Hurricane Floyd cutting a path of destruction down the East Coast, diesel generators, from Florida to the Carolinas, were at a premium for weeks on end as people looked to cope with power outages that took weeks to repair.

The devastation caused by Hurricane Floyd would have an impact on how local and federal officials would plan for such instances. In particular, one of the areas addressed was bringing in emergency generators to provide power at government buildings: many offices were closed for weeks, which was especially problematic as many residents had a need for immediate assistance in the storm’s aftermath.

Many residents along the Eastern seaboard have learned too late about the impact of not having planned for an emergency such as a hurricane by having supplies such as food, water and a power source such as John Deere generators. Hopefully, people will remember Hurricane Floyd and make sure to be prepared for any instance.

Google Tries to Reinvent the News with ‘Fast Flip’

Filed under: Internet — admin @ 4:31 am

Google thinks the news is too slow, and they might just be right. Twitter keeps you informed about breaking news, but click through any news site for a more detailed update and it does take a while for the page to load. Likewise, flash widgets, sidebars, twitter feeds and everything else you get on a usual news site equates to longer page load times.

To make accessing news much faster, Google News has come up with an interestingly new alternative they call Fast Flip. Part of Google Labs, Fast Flip is an experimental way of browsing the news which is almost similar to that of an old microfilm browser. Fast Flip displays news pages almost as if they were pages from a magazine, scrolling side-to-side. Loading time is absolutely fast as opposed to typical news sites. Fast Flip lets you browse according to popular topics, publisher, news section and many more. Currently the results are limited to only a small number of partners providing content. The list includes only three dozen publishers, but big names include The New York Times, the Atlantic, the Washington Post and Newsweek.

Fast Flip is cool to play around with it, but after a while you tend to notice to the downside of it, like for instance, a lack of working hyperlinks. So currently, Fast Flip has nothing to do with a better web browsing experience, but is just static images loaded on a novel interface that would only be exciting to someone who has never used the internet before. It does bring you the news faster, but coming from a company like Google who does understand the web, it is a bit hard to fathom.
